Ok guys, so we are basically done with the book. The mention of the color purple has came up several times but I feel like I still don't understand the true meaning behind it. One line that I feel has a strong connection to why it might be the title of this book is on p203 when Shug is talking to Celie about God. She says that "I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don't notice it." I know this line is of some importance but I'm not sure what it means. I think that Shug is trying to tell Celie that God does not want her to be shut up in just religion and the proper ways of doing things because God, being the creator would want all of his children to have fun and have an enjoyable life. I'm not sure, because that still doesn't tell what the color purple and has to do with the title of the book. what do you guys think?

i think the book is called Color purple because it was the only thing Cellie was always shure about. In many arts she mentions how her favorite color is purple and how she wants this and that to be purple. I also have to agree with the meaning of the quote. It has lots of importance but is hard to understand.

I think that the quote is important because purple is an uncommon color in nature. Like, how often can you walk down the street and see a purple flower there? She is trying to say that God would be angry if they walked through life not noticing all the small things that make it special. Like, a purple flower in a field of grass.

I agree with Johnathan's comment on the color purple in nature but i took that line a little differently. I thought that Celie was a symbol of the Color Purple. Celie was never noticed by anyone has something beautiful. Mr____ and Celie’s so called "father” just used her. They never thought she had any beauty to her. Then when Shug came along she found the color purple in Celie or the beauty that know one else discovered before. I think what God is saying is it would be a waste to let someone like Celie go unnoticed because she is filled with beauty in her own way.

that line also stuck out to me also. I think its like suppost to be a symbol for the story as a whole with women being the "purple flower". If you see someone get treated like dirt as celie is your not suppost to sit there and watch like everyone does. they should help them out. Maybe that doesnt make any sense but thats how i took it. Either way it has importance behind it and a hidden message.

I agree completely with Casey and how Celie was a symbol for purple. Through the entire novel she is always saying how she is never good enough or how bad she looks and is. With this line that Belinda pointed out, it is saying how the color just goes unnoticed. Shug is always bringing purple in(saying it and wearing it) and possibly bringing it into the novel to show the reader the importance of it. I wonder if it will show up some more?
