Well hello hello.I feel cool because i can change the fonts and colors. Makes this blog more exciting haha. But anyways, on to the book. I just finished reading til page 50 like we were suppost to and i think the book is interesting in certain aspects, it however raises many questions for me. One, why does Celie always refer to her husband as Mr. _____ ? Is she scared to use his name becasue shes going to get hit? Which brings me to my next question. Is Mr. ____ black. I mean the way her father talks and sells her basically it seems like shes a slave. How she "picks cotton" (sorry i dont have my book so i cant remember the page but somwhere in the 40s) and cares for the children while her husband goes out and is obsessed with Shug Avery. But then it made me wonder because I know her son Harpo is black, but he doesnt get treated like her. Is that just because shes a woman? Which brings me to my last question of what time do you all think this book takes place in? I was thinking somewhere around the 1800's. Any thoughts? I like this book mostly because its something really different. I like how its written in letters. Its short, right to the point and is in 2nd person. I feel like im reading Celie diary or something, it makes it easier to understand because shes sort-of telling the story. Well, see you guys tomrrow! =]
P.S sorry if the post is really long.
; ) and i picked blue as my color.
So all my posts will be blue! =]

I also really like this book.I think it is so interesting, being able to see her feelings and expressions straight out there with all the events. Nothing is hidden. As to Jen's questions, I feel that she calls him Mr._____ because at this point in the book, she is always saying how she is unable to stand up for herself. So by calling him Mr. ___ it shows her uncertainty, like she is worried if she calls him by his real name that something might happen to her and she would not be able to defend herself. My prediction is that towards the end of the book when she is finally able to fight for herself mentally and physically, she will call him by his real name. I also do believe that Mr. ___ is black. Why else would he want to marry black women including her, Nettie, and Shug Avery which is also black. Harpo his son is also shown to be black, and when Sofia gets in trouble, he makes his mixed half black half white daughter in law go help instead of him. I feel that Harpo is not treated like Celie because one he is the son, and two, I don't think he would beat his son like that, and chances are, he's not going to do what he says anyway. While on the other hand, Celie's marriage purpose is just to take care of the kids, work, and do chores. It is clear to see that there is no love between this marriage. I think this book took place during the Harlem Renaissance or in the early 1900s. This is the time when black males and females are able to show who they are and make it famous. And by including the character of Shug Avery it makes me believe that this story took place during those times. I also believe that this book is really amazing.I feel that even though not many of the events can relate to me, but it continually draws interest to me.
I love this book so far. The letters show everything about Celie because it does not hide any of her feelings. Mr.____ is black because he is married to Celie and has had black kids. Also, like Belinda says "Why else would he want to marry Shug Avery.." In this time period I do not think it would be acceptable to be black and white relationships. On the last question the book must be in the 1900's just because of the connection to the Harlem Renissance. I'm enjoying the book and can't wait for more to come!
p.s Sorry my answers were not too much help, Belinda and I share basically the same ideas apparently, :)
The Color Purple is a different book then I have ever read before. Everything is just laid out on the table as soon as the book starts and it continues like that throughout the story. I like Belinda’s answer to Jen’s question about Mr.____ name but I had a different idea. I think that Celie does not say Mr.____ name because their marriage is not real. Another wards she does not love Mr.____ so it is almost like they treat each other like they aren’t there Mr.____ just uses Celie to fit his needs when he wants them. I think by Celie not calling Mr.____ his real name symbolize Celie’s feelings for Mr.____, which is none. I also agree with Belinda when she states that Mr._____ is black because it is not likely that a black man would marry a black lady back in those times. I think it is ironic how the black man hated being treated like slaves but they treat their women like slaves to. This book defiantly takes place in like 1920s or 30’s because Shug Avery is a character that would fit into the Harlem Renaissance like Belinda has already said. This book is filled with lies that keep unfolding throughout the story and that keeps me want to keep reading. I predict this book will get crazier and crazier as time goes on.
I don’t think Cellie calls her husband Mr. _____ because she is scare but because she is someone she does not care emotionally for. I think Mr. is black and he treats her that way because he has no respect for women. I also agree with Jen I think the book was writing in the 1800’s. I have to also agree with Jen about the style of writing. In my opinion I really like this book.
