hello!!!
Hello!!! We are almost done with this book but there’s is many questions to b answer. First of all what do u guys think about the business of Cellies pants? And if is such a big deal for girls to where pants why is she making them? Does this represent any time in history? Maybe the Harlem renaissance? Or other time? i also love the way the author has two stories going on at the same time :Cellies letters and Netties letters. What do you guys think??

Laura, I think that is a good question that you bring up about the whole why would she make pants if girls are not really suppose to be wearing them. I am guessing that Celie wants to make pants because she really is not the famine type and she is attracted to women. She might be trying to make stand to show how she feels and that girls should be able to wear pants if they want to. I still think that the book takes place during the Harlem Renaissance because of Shug Avery and the mentioning of Bessie Smith who was a popular person for singing the Blues during the Harlem Renaissance. I was a little confused when the author began switching around from Celie to Nettie’s point but I grew to like it because it keeps the story entertaining.
I agree with Casey about the whole not so famine thing. I think that it is more about how Celie finally found something she is good at and that she actually enjoys. Not only with this pants making buisness but also with Shug. I think that this book is based on the time period for the Harlem Renaissance just because of all the entertainment buisness. Also how there was a little bit of segregation but not enough to make things too dramatic. I like the way that the book is based on two sides. It is funny that both sisters can be so far away but share something so close(Celie's Kids). I can't wait to finish the book!
I love this book so far. I feel that the business of Celie is important. I feel that because before she says that she has never worn pants before and that Mr. ___ probably wouldn't want her to wear pants in the beginning, and now that she is with Shug and Mr. ___ has no control of her anymore, the pants is like symbolizing her true self, like Casey says, the not so feminine side. I think that she is making the pants to help encourage other women like her to not be afraid and just come out as who you really are. I feel that in a way, she made pants for Odessa's husband because I feel that he is taking a very motherly role. Although he is not transsexual, i feel that he is the one that takes care of all the kids and cooks and cleans. I do feel that it is still during the Harlem renaissance and i think the author is trying to make it seem like Celie is writing the letters to Nettie instead of to God but i don't think she is sending them while on the other hand she is receiving Nettie's letters. That is what i got from it. what do you guys think?
I thought the pants thing was to like, symbolize African American rights. Like, through the whole story they (Celie, Sophia, Nettie, etc.) are being treated horribly because they are black. The pants is a way of showing that they are starting to become like everyday people. Also, think about it, the whole book is written in letters. I remember in the book "Night John" or something like that, slaves were completely forbidden to read and write. They were kept illiterate because white men and women wanted to feel superiority to them. So having this whole book of letters is to help show how far that African Americans have come. Well, that's what I think about it, what about you guys?
Hey everyone, i agree with a lot of the things that people have brought up. With the whole pants situation i think that maybe shes trying to do it to rebel with the whole girls arent suppost to wear pants thing. I took it as a stand for herself like how she idolizes harpo's ex's ability to stick up for herself and do what she wants.
